How Liberal People Ruined the Holidays for the Rest of Us!

Reminisce with me of the days where Christmas carols were not offensive, where Santa could say “Merry Christmas” and where a town funded Christmas event was viable.

Further and further has the concept of ‘political correctness’ been advocated in our society as the only acceptable practice. And, although we all know there is a certain social courtesy that should be taken into consideration, what has happened has gone far passed reasonable limits.

For example, apparently the phrase black is offensive, so, liberal political correctness dictates that we refer to all black people as ‘African-American’, which is actually a statement of nationality, not race, and completely disregards the fact that the phrase in itself is far more racist (it assumes that all black people are from Africa). This is not because the majority of black people in America rose up and considered the word ‘black’ to be offensive. This is simply because a very small minority did so, and, no doubt, everyone has to be happy, so things are changed for everyone else.

Santa Clause can no longer say “Merry Christmas” because it may offend people who don’t celebrate Christmas. Some may mistaken this as the fault of religion; as if everyone of another religion (or lack of one) vehemently rallied about the streets, offended to the point of tears. But – this is not the case. Of course, a small minority claimed how offended they were, but, only could the prominent liberal ideal of political correctness have the audacity to change everything, to a major detriment, for a minuscule benefit.

According to an issue of the Boston Herald, Santa can no longer “make promises that he can’t keep”. That means, if a child sitting on his lap (wait, children can no longer sit on Santa’s lap) asks for, say, a toy train set, Santa has to reply with, “Well, kid, I aint making any promises.” Santa can no longer say “Ho, ho, ho!” because it may offend women. Obviously, when he chortles in such a manner, he is actually degrading a whole sex rather than expressing a fit of holiday induced joy. There are also rallies to have only a skinny Santa from now on, because it sets bad examples for our children.*

None of the above mentioned things have anything to do with religion. All of these senseless change that are “ruining the holidays” are nothing but a further perpetuation of the over-the-top, liberal idea of “political correctness” – not a fault of religion.

*In said newspaper, to somehow ‘defend’ the idea that Santa Clause is giving children a bad example, there were many quotes of children under the age of 13 saying things like, “Santa definitely needs to lose weight.” – Apparently, the editors did not think to realize that if children know that being overweight is not good for one’s health, and make it clear, it’s obvious that Santa isn’t setting a bad example. Why? Because children, rather than trying to emulate his weight, are saying he must lose it. – A counterproductive point in itself.

It is so easy to whip out the Liberal boogey man isnt it.

Politcal correctness is idiotic on any side. And it is not an exclusively Liberal trait.

I know of conservative people who don’t allow their children to have any sugar or watch any video that isn’t educational. These people would not be considered Liberal by any stretch but they are the biggest whack jobs out there.

I think you can say the being Politically Correct is insane and wrong but to blame it all on Liberals is a bit rediculous!

2 Knox { 12.03.07 at 12:53 am }

Not allowing one’s children to have sugar, or watch any video that isn’t educational is not exactly “liberal”.

That’s… … well… conservative.

(But, I do agree that Political Correctness is horrendous)

Knox, I am just about as liberal as a person can get, but the thing about sugar is neither liberal nor is it conservative, IT IS JUST SMART. ALL refined carbs are EXTREMELY unhealthy. I don’t have any children, but if I did, they wouldn’t have any sugar or any fast food, and they would have as little food that is not organic, as my income would allow. That is not a political issue at all, it is just from having done a lot of research, and learning better.

I posted this on Yahoo answers and here are some results:

Yes. Liberal secular humanist must be stopped at any costs.

I know, to hearten your soul, why don’t you go to a mosque or synagogue and sing some christmas carols, you’ll feel all warm and fuzzy and stuff, I guess.

I blame liberals for your public education system. Your grammar is awful and English is your first language.

not for me. please have your 3rd grade English teacher review your sentences before posting in the future.

We are trying to help the poor get through this “great” time of year.

Hun, where ded u go to skool?

I don’t think that’s the case. You can still celebrate the holidays however you wish. I believe that article is trying to make a mountain out of molehill by exaggerating the situation. It talks in generalities, letting you believe the problem is widespread. It even commented on “African Americans,” which isn’t specific to any holiday. Perhaps I’d be more concerned if they article didn’t sound like a propaganda piece.

As yes, that time of the year when neocons put on their full battle rattle and get ready to go to war to fight for the winter holidays. Have General Bill O’Reilley given all of your battle plans this year? It’s not like there are actual wars going on that are more important than this, now are there?

Of course this might be done on someones independent initiative to whine about how liberals are so horrible and are destroying the holidays, but listening to people whine about irrelevent crap is just one less reason to enjoy the holidays. A better question might be whether neo-con whinning is ruining the holidays for the rest of us?

Why do you resist us? You will be assimilated.

In order to remake society, the traditions held dear must be destroyed. Only after rewriting history and the social code can the citizen soldier of the future be created

This article is from the same publication: How Religious People Ruined the Holidays for the Rest of Us!
What is that supposed to mean?
You say “This one is starting alot of buzz”.

No, but they are trying! They want everyone to be as miserable as they are.

Thanks for article!

These constant complaints about Christmas being ruined are ridiculous. Being sensitive to the fact that other people are not Christians and don’t celebrate Christmas has not ruined anything for me.

I celebrate Christmas, sing and listen to Christmas carols and generally enjoy the season. Stop being so mean, intolerant and insensitive and try to remember the true meaning of Christmas.

Peace and good will.

Buzz for who? Cons who become orgasmic when “libs” are villified? CORPORATE AMERICA is ruining Christmas by setting POLICIES that offend pretty much everyone. Ok, they say, let’s start Christmas in October, but call it “Happy Holidays ! so everyone spends money, not just christians, and we’ll jack the prices on gas and food and all us rich corporate people will have a VERY merry christmas, and we can occupy the middle & lower classes by pitting them against each other. Yea!

Well, first of all, let me point out the fact that it’s hard to take seriously an article that was written by someone who can’t use a Spell Check. (“Santa Clause”?!!) Not only that, but Knox does a fantastic job of overgeneralizing. As a liberal, let me say that I normally refer to people of African descent as “black” rather than “African American”. Also, let me again correct Knox by pointing out the fact that the term “African American” is a reference to a continent, not a country. And yes, we liberals do know that not all blacks are of African descent, but the vast majority of them are. However, in the few cases in which the “blacks” in question are not of African descent, the term “African American” would not be used to describe them. Let me also say that I have no problem wishing someone a “Merry Christmas” if I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he/she celebrates Christmas. However, I’m not about to make the pat assumption that everyone celebrates Christmas, so if I don’t know for certain that someone celebrates Christmas, I wish him/her a “Happy Holidays” instead. It’s an issue of respect. Not only that, but I have never cared about Santa’s weight problem or his chortling, “Ho, ho, ho.” For that matter, I haven’t met any other liberals who care about such trivial things, either. Your link is to a poorly-written article that fails to make a valid point.

you can do any of this as long as you don’t try to force it on any one else – like i take it you do

Let me let let you see this from a Jewish perspective. I have no problem with Christmas. I do get hurt when someone wishes me a Merry Christmas as it is not my holiday and people should think about it before talking. When they wish me a merry Christmas I do not say anything negative comments back to them, I just wish them one too. Although they hurt me, I do not want to hurt them back. Two wrongs do not make a right. Next time somebody wishes you a merry Christmas, think in your mind that they said have a great Ramadan. How would you feel about it. Try to put yourself in somebody else’s shoe, it may allow you to grow up a bit.

the neo cons have ruined christmas cause they sent our families and money to iraq

Other than the Blogger who pinned that crap on liberals there is no evidence provided in your citing that shows that liberals and only liberals are the ones hung up on saying Merry Christmas. I am considered to be liberal and live in a pretty liberal area and most people are saying Merry Christmas. For those who don’t like it we are ready to say sorry and move on.

Did you know that the most conservative of conservatives, the Christian Church once banned the celebration of Christmas? For awhile in England one couldn’t even say the word Christmas without fear of reprisal.

Where I live and work it is very diverse. We have people of many faiths and from a variety of countries working here. We all celebrate Christmas. It is done in the secular manner. Most enjoy the decorations, gift giving and Santa Claus. They tolerate the songs about a savior etc. but they are just songs to them. I never once heard a Jew, Muslim, Hindu, or Buddhist complain about celebrating Christmas. Actually I believe a few Scrooges seem to be complaining and others blow it way, way out of proportion.

If you watched the CNN special about Jesus a while back, scientists believe that Jesus was born around April 14, which makes a lot more sense to me- spring, sun, renewal, easter.
Christmas is a pagan holiday taken over by early Christians. It celebrated the end of the year.
Now it’s just a consumer holiday. I would say the corporations are ruining it.
When I worked in mental health, we were always packed around Christmas. Lot’s of lonely and depressed people out there. Lot’s of dysfunctional families getting together lol. And then especially in Jan they came in, after getting the credit card bills.

I’m sorry that libs ruined your shopping holiday. It’s a shame that libs just don’t understand the spirit of Christmas, which is to ignore the fact that many people celebrate Hannukah at that time. Christians are good people who know that saying Happy Holidays includes Jewish people in their well wishing, and good Christians know they must hate the Jews and ignore their festival. Jews are not good Americans; their Hannukah doesn’t push the economy by the purchasing of cheap, tawdry trinkets which elevate cash to the status of a god.

So merry Cashmas to all and to all a good sale.

My favorite political correctness among born-again Christians is the banning of Haloween as promoting Satan, witches, and such. I saw a great church billboard to that effect:

HALLELUJAH PARTY OCT 31
Games – Fun – Food
Magician to perform!

This is surely satire.

9 GB { 11.24.08 at 7:06 pm }

I don’t know the reasons of those who started the bellyaching about the traditional celebration of Christmas, but I’ll betcha they don’t share my view that CHRISTmas is first a CHRISTian observation of the birth of a Savior, whether it happened on December 25th or April 14th. If people want to refer to the season as “holiday” instead of “Christmas”, let them do so. It won’t offend me. I can’t understand why some would be offended if I were to wish them a Merry Christmas, because that’s how I choose to observe the “holidays”. Just saying thank you or nothing at all is more polite than making an issue over it.

10 GB { 11.24.08 at 7:28 pm }

Why make a big deal about it?

11 Songbird { 11.24.08 at 11:21 pm }

I celebrate Christmas because I believe in the birth of Christ… but we live in a country where there are people of many faiths… not all of them celebrate Christmas. The Constitution of the US promises religious freedom… that means making sure all celebrations are honored… not just the Christian ones. So, if libs spoiled Christmas for you… you are going to have to take it up with the founding fathers… they promised people religious freedom. I think it was wise of them to make sure that verbage got put into the Constitution. Celebrate Christmas… it’s still the same beautiful holiday I remember as a kid… just remember to be tolerant of those who don’t believe in Santa.

HOHOHO!!!
Get real people. we don’t live in glass houses nor should we. If a corporation does not want to hurt a certain group of peoples feelings. I understand unless they are so out of whack that the request is foolish. offensive behavior is subjective and personal. It should not be dictated to the extent simply because it hurt someones feelings.

13 Linda { 11.25.08 at 2:44 pm }

Christmas originally a pagan holiday? First of all Christmas means Christ Mass and it is a Holy Day a celebration of our Savior being born…..Christmas being turned into a pagan holiday yes that has happened. For those that do not believe that is your choice…..You can take away the glitter, the lights & decorations the manic spending but it still remains the celebration of the birth of Christ the messiah….You don’t like it well that is fine no one is forcing you to celebrate anything that you choose not too…..Don’t like that Christians have this day as a Federal Holiday well write your congressman……

14 Jeremy White { 11.30.08 at 6:28 pm }

Linda,

Solstice is the original holiday. Christmas came afterwards. Jesus was not born in December.

We all know what Christmas means, but we’re not trying to argue semantics here. That’s silly.

Did you hear the latest nonsense from some idiot judge who says they shoulndnt use the term ILLEGAL ALIENS what else dose she want us to call them WET BACKS?BANDITOS? heres one judge who needs to be benched for life and the paycheck deducted by 75%

16 p_wee55 { 10.01.09 at 10:50 pm }

This is for that person named Chef…even though you’ll probably never see this.

I just wanted to set the record straight on the”African American” Thing. i agree with the message above about that. i was born here on american soil, both of my parents were born her as well and theres, and theres….are you seeing where this is going? I’m American, always have been, so to call me african american is crazy. Majority of blacks in the US today lost their african heritage sence we were ripped from the land andall of our tradition and heritage and brought here as slave. So theres that. If we want to get really technical ever one born on american soil should be call American and the extra terms wether it be African, Asian, Irish, hispanic, Should be added on if they were born in that country and became a legal american citizen.

Thats all. But the above is info is a bit biased without much evidence. Oh and dont make fun of people becasue they cant spell or their grammer stinks, thats so imature.
