Does Racism Go Both Ways? How is it fair?

I don’t usually write blogs to piss people off but I have in the past debated subjects of race with a prominent leader in diversity.   I usually would bring her a subject just to get a rise out of her and we would go at it especially when it comes to schooling and what would be considered racism.  I remember one time she had an event at a local college for the incoming minorities to get together and get to know each other.  My question to her was this racism?  As a white man why couldn’t I go?

I can go on and on but she did invite me and we discussed this whole subject often.  She told me she used our chats in her teaching to college students.  She agreed that sometimes the white male is now the minority in some ways.  Is that true?  I thought that was cool!  But I always think about things like”BET black entertainment network”.  If we had a “WET White entertainment network” would it be racist? My answer “yes it would be. Is BET racist?  I think I understand why this is ok. but my question is: Isn’t there racism with this being ok for BET but not for WET?  Or is it?  I personally think to end racism we should not feed it anymore.  I ponder this question often.

I understand the history of the USA and how minorities have been treated in the past.  I am not proud of it.  I understand back in 1968 they created the Miss Black America pageant since the other Miss America Pageant did not allow blacks.  Again this is a history I am not proud of luckily I was not even born but since I believe the USA had become a hell of allot more educated we evolved to understand that this was wrong.  They fixed the rules of the Miss America Pageant and every woman is welcome to compete.  I also understand that Miss Black America is continuing even today because of the history and how it has opened avenues for women of color but…..is it now considered racist?  Is not allowing a white women into this pageant based on her color a racist issue?

My point for this article is to begin a debate and discuss the issues with America when it comes to Racism today.  I bring these questions up since they are part of our society.  I believe “to end racism we need to end racism.”

I don’t think something like BET could be considered a form of racism. Nationally, black, Asian, Hispanic, and any other race would probably be considered a minority. But depending where you live, regionally, it might not be the case. Anyways, its not racism, its marketing. Targeted, and catering to a select group.

In my opinion affermitive action is wrong. You should get into school, get a promotion, a job or whatever based on your qualifications period.

As far as I’m concerned, everyone should start out equal and then work from there. “Undocumented Immigrants” should not get free scholarships and/or grants to attend major universities when those that have followed the rules cannot. I’d like fair on all levels, but I dont think that could ever happen. Either that, or they should make scholarships for blondes.

So would WET be just marketing?

Probably. – But, the term “white” refers to a much larger group of people, in general. It’d be harder to incorperate all “white” stereotypes as well as BET incorperates all “black” stereotypes.

Seriously.

BET is to black stereotypes as Kids Say the Darnest Things is to kids saying the darnest things.

Doesn’t everyone think that we should all be judged by the content of our character not the color of our skin- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He would think affermative action is moronic

I just think its unfair that so many people are bringing up what whites have done in the past to justify the way we’re being treated today. Yes it was horrible the way minorities were treated. Even so, why am I being punished for something that happened over 50 years ago when I havnt been alive for 20?
My point is simple, I don’t want to see ANYONE punished for ANYTHING they had nothing to do with.
I agree with DJL. The only way to end racism is to end racism.

If the people of power really wanted to end racism the first thing they would do is remove the question of race from all forms and documents. Another would be to allow white people to obtain educational grants and scholarships.
