You couldn't have been, as even the apostles weren't there when it was written a few hundred years after Christ died. It was written by cardinals and such that pick and chose what they wanted to include. Second of all, fear has been in religion since the dawn of time...that's a well known fact before science came along...being a good person because God wants you to be is faith. Being a good person so that you don't die a tragic death via flood, lightening strike, or turning to a pillar of salt is fear.
