Disgusting News Item of the Day- BOYCOTT US AIRWAYS!!

Mr. Bill Sullivan, an 82 year old WWII Veteran was kicked off a US Airways flight by the pilot because he didn’t have the proper paperwork for his oxygen machine that he needs due to congestive heart failure and emphysema.

Mr. Sullivan needs to wear his oxygen device 24 hours a day 7 days a week.Mr. Sullivan was traveling home to after Christmas to hiAis home in Sacramento CA following a visit to Phoenix AZ.  He said he was not asked to produce any paperwork on his way to Arizona and when he boarded to plane on his way back to Sacramento he was stopped by a man and asked if he had a doctor’s permit to use the oxygen.  Mr. Sullivan said he didn’t but was seated anyway.  A short time later the pilot had him removed from the airplane.

Mr. Sullivan said “I’ve never been so rattled and upset and embarrassed in my life,”

What was the airline’s response when the found out an American hero of WWII had been treated in such a way?

Here is a direct quote by Morgan Durrant of US Airways:

“The decision was made by the captain to deny boarding,” “We always regret that but it is the captain’s discretion.  At issue was a special form meant to be signed by a doctor. Sullivan didn’t have it but knew that he needed it. He said he wasn’t asked to produce the document on his US Airways flight from Sacramento to Phoenix.

“The rules are the rules, the policies are the policies,” Durrant said. “We need to follow it in this case. We didn’t follow it for half of his trip and shame on us.”

No, Mr. Durrant shame on you for embarrassing an 82 year old man who deserved compassion and help not humiliation and ill treatment.  I may not be following the news as closely as some, but I haven’t heard of any 82 year old WWII veteran terrorists lately.

My story looks like minor leagues compared to this poor guy’s tale of woe. All I’ve been through is being stranded in a distant city overnight with my family the last two times I’ve flown on US AIRWAYS due to airline mechanical problems.

The pilot in this elderly man’s case made an extreme judgment error – following rules to the letter will do that, indicating that the pilot was probably not the swiftest guy out there. At least the airline acknowledged a mistake was made.

Ini my dealings with US AIRWAYS, I’ve dealt with understaffed departments, overstressed, rude employees, and in general, a company with resources incapable of handling their traffic.

They’ve been voted the worst of the major airlines. Let’s Boycott US Airways, even if it means paying more for a flight at times. Most of us need to get where we’re going in a timely fashion.

By the way, did you know that the USAIRWAYS CEO had a DUI conviction in January of 2007 (plus he had two others 20 years before)? This is not a good example for the CEO of a company in the transportation industry to set, where the pilots have to be perfectly sober for obvious reasons. And yet, the board kept Parker on as CEO.
