FDA Approves Cloned Meat! Yum!

I heard that the FDA has approved the sale of cloned meat and milk.  So I had to do alittle research and check this out “Despite the fact that cloned animals suffer high mortality rates and those who survive are often plagued with birth defects and diseases, the FDA did not give adequate consideration to the welfare of these animals or their surrogate mothers in its deliberations,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States. “Furthermore, no regulations exist in the United States that protect farm animals during cloning research.” OK let’s start from the top.

These cloned animals suffer high mortality rates and those who survive are plagued with birth defects and diseases?  Let’s stop right there and think about it.  That brings me to the movie “Multiplicity” starring Michael Keaton.  Remember he cloned himself and after the 3rd cloning the clone was shaving his tongue? My question would be why these animals have diseases and defects?  I would think something would be wrong with them.  Do you want a cow with 3 asses giving you milk for your cereal?  Or maybe these mad scientists are actually trying to make them deformed to get more meat out of them.  The disease thing freaks me out also. Why are they getting more diseases?  Messing with cloning is messing with nature I think.  I can understand trying to cure a disease but not creating clones.  What will happen with the evolution of these cows?  Create them to have more legs so you can get more meat out of them?  I am believing that Vegetarians may be the only ones safe in the future!

Is there any moral, ethical or religious issues with this?  How about they at least label the products as cloned?  I know I would want to know.  FDA believes they will not require the food items to be labeled as such.  I think there needs to be some public push back on that one!  I know that there has been more research done on the cloning of these animals but why would they think it is ok for these animals to live shorter lives not to mention the diseases etc?  What about the people eating these foods?  Is there going to be a study on this?

This subject will not go away any time soon so start to put your thoughts together and welcome to the messed up scientific future!

While the thought of becoming a vegetarian is becoming more and more prominent in my mind, I can’t help but think about “The Family Guy” episode that I watched the other night. Peter had a stroke (after obtaining “free hanburgers or life” for saving the owners life of something) and ate something like 32 of said burgers in a single sitting. Peter walked around depressed for a while, as he had no control over the left (?) side of his body. Until one day, Mr. Griffin walked into a “Stem Cell Treatment Center”…five minutes later, he walked out and he was perfectly fine. If it worked for Peter, I don’t see the harm in consuming mutated mammals that are torchered even more that the ones we eat now. Oh wait, but that’s a cartoon! Silly me! I get those things confused sometimes…

And on the flip side, if the FDA approves this activity just so that we can send cloned meat to starving, third world countres, I hope they realize that the majority of these countries are in their situation because their governing officials are greedy asses, and wouldn’t think twice about suing the US for the “needless suffering our tainted meat caused”. it is, after all, the American way.
