Top 17 Bizarre Foods

Here are some Bizarre Foods I have found from around the world:

  • Cuitlacoche:  Cuitlacoche Huitlacoche is the fungal, culinary delicacy Ustilago maydisthat grows on ears of corn.  Another word its Nasty corn fungas that people call the Mexican Truffle.  It is used in tamales and as a seasoner used like garlic.  It has a rich, earthy flavor.  Put that one in your mouth!
  • Balut:  15daybalutegg.png  This is a duck or chicken fertalized egg.  While its growing inside these are eaten like its a hard boiled egg.  I remember Anthony Zimmern said the worst part is the liquid inside the egg.  Little bones and feathers mmmm.
  • Ortolan: OrtolanFor centuries, a rite of passage for French gourmets has been the eating of the Ortolan. These tiny birds—captured alive, force-fed then drowned in  Armagnec—were roasted whole and eaten that way, bones and all, while the diner draped his head with a linen napkin to preserve the precious aromas and, some believe, to hide from God.– The Wine Spectator
  • Hákarl:  Hakarld Icelandic delicacy that is basically shark that is buried for 6 weeks to rot then eaten. Anthony Bourdaine said its “the single worst, most disgusting and terrible tasting thing” Who by the way is my idol!
  • Durian: Durian ”Its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia.” is the quote from food writer Richard Sterling.  Need we say more?
  • Kegogi: Dog MeatIs a dish of rice and shredded DOG meat.  That is right DOG meat! Need I say more!  It is said to taste like what a wet dog smells like.
  • Criadillas: Bull Testicles They (bulls balls) are sliced first and then cooked with garlic and parsley or in the USA deep fried called Rocky Mountain Oysters.  They are said to taste good but I will take their word for it.
  • Taco Sesos: Cow Brains These are simply put Cow Brains.  With mad cow disease how can these not be popular? It is said it taste like organ meat and are very soft. I will take their word on it.  What the hell does organ meat taste like anyway?
  • Haggis: haggis sheep’s heart, liver and lungs, minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally boiled in the animal’s stomach for approximately three hours. Holy Cow who came up with that recipe?
  • Vegemite: Vegemite is a dark brown savoury food paste made from yeast extract, used mainly as a spread on sandwiches, toast and cracker biscuits.  I know this is popular out in Australia but again who thought of trying this?  If you want to know go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite. I don’t care what you to say to me its bizarre.
  • Sago Worms: Sago Worms These worms are eaten raw or fried. Its innards is creamy and tastes like rich toffee.  Right……
  • Kumis: Kumis  OK hear me on this.  Its mares milk that is basically turned into beer.  Yes milk beer!  Drink that for breakfast.  I can see the advertisements now.  During the fermentation, Lactobacilli bacteria acidify the milk, and yeasts turn it into a carbonated and mildly alcoholic drink.
  • Casu Marzu:  Maggot Cheese  is a cheese found in Sardinia, Italy, notable for being riddled with live insect larvae. Casu marzumeans “rotten cheese” in Sardinian and is known colloquially as maggot cheese.
  • Stinkheads:( need a Picture)  fermented salmon heads, are a traditional food of the Yupik peoples in southwest Alaska. A customary way of preparing them was to place salmon heads and salmon guts in a wooden barrel, cover it with burlap, and bury it in the ground for about a week.
  • Dinuguan: Dinuguan is a Filipino savory stew of blood and meat simmered in a rich, spicy gravy of pig blood, garlic, chili and vinegar.
  • Pickled Baby Octopus: pickedbabyoctopusI saw this in a sushi restaurant.  I couldn’t do it.  Just think of eating the insides of the fat head!
  • Gefilte Fish: Gefilte Fish are poached fish patties or balls made from a mixture of ground deboned fish, mostly carp (common carp). They are popular in the Ashkenazi Jewish community.  Oh yeah and it comes in some kind of sick thick liquid. This picture makes it look edible but its nasty if you don’t believe me go buy a jar.

Okay, my rule has always been I won’t eat anything that swims or crawls, or I’ve had as a pet. Apparently I need to add a few more limitations.

Gefilte Fish are fish “burgers”, but they aren’t nasty.Although I don’t personally like it, it’s just a fish burger.And the sick liquid is common, average and normal soup. I don’t know what they’ve been selling you, but it’s nothing more than fish and soup

Cuitlacoche is quite delicious actually. I had it a restaurant served with slices of bread and seasoned with cumin and pepper. It tastes very earthy, not unlike some mushrooms.

Does anyone know where I can find an aphrodisiac made with stallion semen that is found in some far East countries?

14 Daniel { 03.15.10 at 8:39 pm }

Vegemite made the list? Honestly? It’s just a bitter savoury spread kinda like Marmite, compared to some of the other stuff on this list it’s not really bizarre. Quite tasty actually if you like savoury food.

15 Swampy { 03.17.10 at 8:34 am }

Vegimite is normal for a start and although i love it will have to say that it is just an Ozzy rip off of Marmite! I have a mate who gets candied jellyfish on a stick from Japan man, try harder!swampy

Well, I’d say score 3 for the Filipinos! Balut is my favorite. Can’t get enough of it. Dinuguan is an everyday viand here. And there is an entire industry thriving from the sale of Durian! By the way I’m eating raw goat’s balls and brain dipped in spicy vinegar with my uncles right now. Add that to your list! I dunno why fear factor is such a hit when its just oh so common here in my country.
