Top 17 Things To Do Or See In Rhode Island

I have lived in Rhode Island all my life but recently moved to New Hampshire.  I will always consider myself a Rhode Islander and miss the simple things Rhode Island has to offer.  Here is my top 17 things to do, see, or eat in Rhode Island:

  • Dells Lemonade  Dells Lemonade: I may have to explain what this is because when I moved to NH no one knew what I was talking about.  When you say Lemonade in RI your talking Frozen Slushy Lemonade not that watery stuff everywhere else in the world.  We have trucks that drive around RI selling this wonderful gift from GOD!  This last summer I took some NH friends to a RI beach and introduced them to Frozen Lemonade (Dell’s).  He tried to drink it with a straw!  You don’t drink it with a straw you squeeze the cup into your mouth.  I guess you need to live in RI to understand our way of life!
  • Coffee Milk  Coffee Milk:  You don’t even understand!  This is the coffeeiest, creamiest, cold comfort food in RI! Kids in RI don’t grown up drinking Chocolate milk they drink Coffee Milk!  Nothing better then going to the New York System getting some weinies(RI residents know what I mean I will tell you more later on) , fries and washing it down with this wonderful bit of heaven.

  • Hot Weiner:I love these things.  They are also called gaggas!  When I was little my grandmother took me to this place.  When I was older I went there with my friends after a night of partying.  If you purchase these pieces of love you and put them in your car you will have a new air freshener for weeks!  They are probably the lowest grade of hotdog (almost white on the inside with little bones every so often) topped with mustard, a wonderful greasy seasoned meat sauce, finally chopped onions with and celery salt. They wrap them in paper and everything gets squished and greasy.   The chef (hahahaha) lines them up his bare arm like in the picture and makes them right in front of you.  Sweat and all.  You have to see this!
  • coffee-cabinet.jpg Coffee Cabinet:  Don’t even dare call this a coffee shake!  It is not because it is in RI.  Therefore it is called a COFFEE CABINET!  No difference though.  I didn’t even know what a shake was till I was like 12.   What the hell was a strawberry shake anyway?
  • Crescent Park Carousel Crescent Park Carousel:  Ok here is the history.  When I was a little tike my parents took me to Crescent Park.  It was a great little amusement park.  It closed but the Carousel had so much history that eventually it ended up open and back up in RI.  I believe it is .25 a ride and you take these little rings and throw them in a clowns mouth.  If you receive the gold one I believe you get a free ride.  I haven’t been there in years but it was always fun.
  • Aunt Carries  Clam Cakes Aunt Carries:I go there at least once a year while visiting the beaches.  Its a typical beach restaurant.  Windows open to the salty air.  Everyone who comes in looks like hell from the day at the beach.  Love the chowder (chowda) clam cakes and steamers!  You have to understand when I say clam cakes I think everyone knows what they are.  So if you don’t just let me know and I will explain them.  That’s what I’m talkin about!
  • Downtown  Downtown:  That what everyone in Providence calls the city.  We are going to go downtown!  Does that make sense?  The nightlife is DOWNTOWN! Speaking of Downtown:
  • Haven Brothers  Haven Brothers Diner: Located outside City Hall downtown!  This is the greasiest food you can imagine but it is wonderful!  Everyone needs to go there once after a hard night of partying at the clubs!
  • waterfires Providence Water Fires:  Absolutely beautiful summer night in DOWNTOWN.  It is family friendly and brings everyone together.
  • Ice Skate In Providence Providence Ice Skating:  Right outside the Providence Place and City Hall.  My family loved it.  I can’t skate but it’s fun to watch.
  • Providence place Mall  Providence Place Mall:  I know it’s just a mall but it’s a very nice mall with everything!  It is right in the center of Providence with so much to do.  Lot’s of good food and upscale stores.  Always have a good time there.
  • newport Newport:  It’s the playground for the rich.  Giant Mansions to visit.  The cliff walk which is viewed in the picture.  The cliff walk walks a cliff around the rocky shore in front of these awesome mansions.  Newport has many shops and restaurants to explore as well as the beautiful beaches.  Oh don’t forget the Tennis Hall Of Fame.
  • Block Island Block Island:  Vacation land in RI.  Take the ferry out of Galilee and relax.  Cliffs and little shops let you hang out and explore.
  • Garlilee Galilee: This is probably my favorite part of RI.  Down in Narragansett this is where allot of fishing boats and ferries enter.  There is a beach where  you can swim and enjoy all the boats entering and docking.  There are also plenty of food establishments so you can sit on the rocks at night and watch all the boats come in with their lights on.
  • Pawsox  Pawsox:  As Rhode Islanders call them.  They are the Pawtucket Redsox.  Fun family atmosphere where you can have an inexpensive night out.  Here you will see the future stars of the MLB.  When I was little I went with my family to so many nights.  I will never forget it.
  • 4th of july Bristol 4th of July Parade:  Oldest 4th of July parade in the country.  Plan on going the night before otherwise you will never get a spot.  It is a big RI tradition.
  • Wrights Farm Wrigths Farm:  The absolute best french fries in the world!  The best fall off the bone baked chicken in the world! The best salad dressing in the world!  Need I say more!

I find it a bit disturbing that you find hot weiners enjoyable…from a guy who went to Johnson and Wales and was on the (food) safety committee for Sodex’ho for years. There are only 2 states in the entire country that this amazing low-grade of hot dog can actually be considered “meat”…New York and Rhode Island. I guess that’s why so many refer to Rhode Island as the “6th Borough”….

Everything else is cool, just the hot weiners gross me out…

As a Rhode Islanda, I must agree with Lisa, gaggas are pretty bad for you. But you haven’t lived until you tried one.

Real Rhode Islanders eat weiners, sahsage and peppas from da hill and quite often drink some Gansett beahs to wash it all down. . .
