Does Science Threaten religion?

  Religion

   Galileo was denounced by the Catholic Church because he started the scientific revolution.  First he discovered some of the laws of gravity by dropping things off the Leaning Tower of Pisa.  Second creating his own telescope, he discovered the earth orbited the sun not the other way around.  The Roman Catholic Church as this time preached that the earth stood sill in the center of the universe.  Galileo basically declared that religious leaders had little to say about matters of science.

  Charles Darwin’s said humanity evolved from lower life forms.  We as people evolved over millions of years contrary to the belief of The Roman Catholic Church.  He basically through out the whole book from the Bible, Genesis.

  “Scopes monkey trial” in 1925, in the state of Tennessee put a science teacher names John Thomas Scopes on trial for teaching evolution in a local high school.   State laws at the time forbade teaching that did not support teachings from the bible.  A year later, the US Supreme Court struck down all such laws as unconstitutional.

  In 1992 the Vatican conclude the church’s silencing of Galileo was wrong.  This brings us to the questions.  Is religion slowly concluding that the bible is just a bunch of stories created to teach people about their faith?  Maybe at the time people could not understand science and this was a simple way of teaching their followers?  How could the whole world be flooded for Noah’s Arc?  Only 2 of all species survive? It is impossible that all living creatures could inhabit the world again over a few thousand years ,right?  Science has created the big bang theory which goes everything against the church teachings of Genesis.

  Muslim extremists and even countries run on Muslim beliefs denounce any disagreement with any of their beliefs.  One country recently tried to put to death a teacher for naming a teddy bear Mohammad!  Is the Muslim religion and many others behind the evolution of the Catholic Church?  What religion will evolve to adopt the scientific philosophies?

  I have to believe there is no doubt a higher power but what if any religion is right?  How can religious leaders debate that scientific evidence is wrong?  Tell me your thoughts….

i think they could do it by integrating their teachings with new discoveries made by science… for example, despite the big bang theory, WHERE did the big ball of shit come from that blew up?And secondly, how did life spawn on earth? Is it just a chemical reaction?

Why do you say you have no doubt there is a higher power? A gut feeling or reason?

3 DJL { 02.20.08 at 9:11 am }

Nope, not a gut feeling but think about it. Something had to put matter out in space to create something. I believe our brains can’t comprehend this anyway. How can outerspace never end? I can’t comprehend that. So How was something put into nothing to create something? Only a higher power can make that happen. Does that make sense? Not to me :)

Well, I find it a simpler explanation to believe in a universe that has always existed in some form (even pre-big bang), than to believe in a god that created the universe and has always existed.

But it had to come from somewhere? Sometime? Something? It couldn’t just be?

6 Steven { 02.20.08 at 11:26 am }

Where did God come from? He had to come from somewhere? Sometime? Something? He couldn’t just be?

Actually, that story about Galileo is misleading. The Church had no problem with the idea that the Earth went around the sun (Copernicus came up with the idea 70 years before, and it popular amongst many clergymen), it was rather his gall in casting the Pope as the idiot Simplicio in his book which earned him the ire of the Pope and led to his denouncement.

So he was a flamer of the pope and got banned? Funny how that was happening even back then……
As for the rest, who can say what came first. Its the chicken and the egg debate.
Wow we have come along way out of the cave huh.

“Hey Cletus…how do you think this here world works, how was it made, why are we here?”…”Gee Jethro…I dunno…must be God”

“But it had to come from somewhere? Sometime? Something? It couldn’t just be?”

Actually, no. Existence itself is a function of the universe. Whatever was before the universe didn’t exist as such. Existence is just a property. But then, there was no “before” before the universe, because there was no time before the universe.

So, no time. No existence. But surely a great beardy fellow?

Sorry. Nope. OCCAM’S RAZOR, BITCHES.

@Wolf359loki. The chicken and the egg debate. There is no debate, assuming you didn’t fall for the whole God thing. Everything evolved. the egg came first because what we know as a chicken today evolved from something else, these changes don’t happed to living creatures but slowly over each generation. So the egg held the first dna of a chicken because before the egg was something that wasn’t a chicken. It amazes me that in todays world people still believe in God or at least the whole Bible nonsense. Its ridicules.

our understanding on time and space and the nature of existence are so limited. In a thousand years time, we may have a better understanding of how time works. Maybe time is a giant circle, with no beginning, and no end.

You should be burned at the stake. You know, just to make sure you’re not a witch. Or bleed out the evil blood if you prefer. If you read this message backward, you will see nataS.

I don’t know if you can tell this or not, but you are making one of the fundamental mistakes that people have been making since the creation of the earth. You are placing the highest point of intelligence in man. You say that you cannot comprehend the universe never ending, so you wont believe it. Since it cannot be comprehended, it cannot be true. Does that make sense? Do you only believe what you can comprehend? I think you are giving yourself way too much credit. Study any realm of science and you will find vast amounts of “things” that happen that no one can understand. It is very arrogant (and ignorant) to make yourself the source of your understanding.

This is why I could never be an atheist. No matter how many times you ask the question “why?” you never come to an end. Eventually, there are no more answers, and it really makes you wonder. I like to think of myself as a very logical person, and believe scientific facts over any religious book or teaching. Over my years of searching, I have yet to find a religion I can honestly believe (I really respected Buddhism though). So until I die, I’m just gonna sit back and let the religiously zealous argue amongst themselves and with the “non-believers.”

Happilly agnostic =)

Even if you assume that there is a superbeeing that fired the bigbang you still have to explain how it come to be in the first place …

Your article lacks authenticity. When you begin with the Catholic Church versus Galileo issue, and fail to deal with the actual issues of the day, you end with erronous conclusions. The primary issue between the Church and Galileo was his failure to live up to his agreement to present all currently acceptable theories about the solar system. Also, the Church did not have such a narrow view of the possible understandings of the universe, as you present.

Furthermore, if you really look at history, western science and education was primarily brought to you by the Catholic Church; the scientists often being monks and priests.

It is easiest to not believe in the Divinity of Jesus Christ if you choose to ignore the empirical evidence that abounds in the world (and I don’t mean only how beatiful is creation).

When you have a close relationship with God you can feel his guidance and very plainly see how he affects your life. The main problem with belief is.. if you dont want to see something then you probably wont, but thats true for so many things. the one question of our creation is so incomprehensible that you never know what to think, did god create the world or did a big explosion of nothing cause our creation.. something always existed and sounds ridiculous doesnt it? if nothing existed then how did we happen?

19 Edward { 11.25.08 at 8:37 pm }

I’m a Catholic and believe in God. I believe that God created the universe , then created man. I do not believe that science created the universe, nor do I believe of evolution. I would need concrete evidence that science created the universe, that evolution created man, and our intelligience was done by design.
My belief and faith is with God. I don’t need proof while living. If I do see the kingdom of Heaven, all questions will be answered.
What does science say about the place called Hell, and what about the devil?
Thank you, I had my say.

when you have a logical perspective on life, it’s pretty easy to not see any signs of god. its funny to watch religious believers find explanations for everything in their life through god as ‘he works in mysterious ways’. it’s amazing how comforting life must be to give up and say that ‘god created the universe, and there’s no creation of god, everpresent/omnipresent machine’. are people getting smarter, and not just because of this information age? the real question @Edward, is why does science not say anything about hell, and the answer, is because there is no logical reason to believe it exists outside of a book written by a few ‘inspired’ individuals, probably as inspired as L.Ron Hubbard (i.e-money), it is but fear mongering to get you to act as they want, follow their code or go to HELLLLLL! or this defense, “if i’m wrong then i die and dont go to heaven…but if i’m right…lolz all around. has anyone ever thought about what the single mind is capable of in it’s last minutes of activity? do you know that time is relative? it is alright to not know the answer, do not fear our inability to comprehend complex things

the big bang happened because of quantum particles, quantum particles appear randomly throughout time and space and sometimes can explode and realease materials. as for you people who believe in religion of any form, try this argument. Why, if god was willing to talk to just about anybody that lived in the supposed time of christ, will he speak with nobody in the world of today? i mean, our world is worse off now than it was 2000 years ago. also, how do you explain all the other religions that have the same principals AND story as “the lord our savior”? there are many of those, such as Maia, Dionysis, and even Horace, each had 12 deciples, died for three days and then rose again, hell, they were even born on the same day! i have studied religion formost of my life now, and the more that i study the more that i see that religion is flawed. even more so now that i see America’s precious christianity/baptist going a step further to actually want people to take their rights away. ever hear of the Westboro Baptist Church?

It’s amazing that people still believe that there’s not a God or a Supreme Being that could’ve created the world and all living beings. The fact is the science is mere speculation and theory based on men who were intoxicated with the idea of logic and reasoning destined to stomp out the celestial. Our lives, our complex universe and the beauty of it all cannot be mere coincidence. I want to be clear and neutral and at the same time state that one must be open to all understanding. God as described in the bible of Judeo/Christian an Islamic scriptures, allow man to ponder with the idea of faith and trusting Him regardless of not being able to see Him. The bible describes God as pure and powerful enough to blot out your life if in His presence. This would lead us into the scriptures concerning Jesus the One who came as a shepherd to lead us to do well among man and ultimately to Heaven. Let us not be angry by the lack of knowledge of the unknown but be free by the understanding God has given us. There are no guarantees that this world can offer except death and suffering. Trust in Jesus and be free, all He asks is that you except Him and believe that He can forgive you of any sins you’ve ever committed in your life. Life can be simple but human beings bound to complicate things make God unreachable by creating burdening yokes too hard for man to attain. Be free and allow God to speak to you today and free you of this life’s troubles. You may be your own worst enemy with the help of evil in this world destruction is knocking at your door. Careful not to let your feeble minds to enter into Satan’s complex plan to destroy you and take you with him into the Lake of Fire.
