Slavery Still Exists!

 I know what your thinking.  NO it does not exist but it does!  The British Empire banned slavery in 1833 and the USA followed suit in 1865.  But according to Anti-Slavery International (ASI), as many as 400 million men, women, and children (almost 7 percent of humanity) live today in conditions that amount to slavery (Janus, 1996). 

  ASI says there are 4 types of slavery still in existence::

• Chattel Slave:  This is 1 person owning another.  This practice is against the law almost everywhere.  But this still takes place in many countries in Asia, the Middle East and especially Africa.
• Debt Bondage:  This is a practice by which employers hold workders by paying them too little to cover their debts.  This is where the employer does not recieve enough income to pay for the food and housing provided by the employer.  For all pracitical purposes they are enslaved.  Many sweatshop in poor countries fall into this catagory (McCarthy, 1998).
• Servile Forms of Marriage:  This is also a form of slavery.  In India, Thailand, and some African nations, families marry off women against their will.  Most end up as slaves working for their husband’s families.  Some are even forced into prostitution.
• Child Slavery:  This is the second most common form of slavery.  Desperately poor families make their children take to the streets to fend for themsleves.  Up to 100 million children, many in poor countries of Latin Amercia fall into this catagory.

In 1948 the United Nations issues its Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states; “No one shall be held in slavery or servitutde; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.”  50 years later this evil still exists!  How can the United Nations combat this horrible form of human torture?  Should they police the world and hold governments that do not irradicate these practices accountable?  I know many countries bash the United States but it does not exist and will not be tolerated. In my state the slogan is “Live Free or Die”!
