Are The Rich Worth What They Earn?

 Money

Take this as an example.  Micheal Jordan earned $33 million dollars in just 1 year of playing basketball.  He made more money then his whole team combined!    Is this pay worth more then 1000 police officers?  How about all 100 US Senators?  Do earnings reflect peoples social importance?

Think of these examples…a maid makes $7 an hour if they are lucky.  An educated chef makes about $25 an hour!   Why do we want our children to go to college?  . Maybe to be Jim Carrey who makes about $100,000 an hour filming a movie!  Is anyone worth that?  Oprah Winfrey collects $200,000 an hour  for chatting with people on TV!  Tim Allen make $1 an episode for filming a half hour episode of Home Improvement!  Even Elvis Presley still makes $35 million a year! OK you probably saying they are in the spotlight so we help them earn it.  So how about in the year 2000 the CEO of Oracle computer earned more then $350 million dollars.  How many people has he laid off? The average teacher would have to work more then 10,000 years to earn that kind of salary.

We need to look at how important any occupation is.  Obviously, we do not pay someone based on this but we pay them based on their popularity.  We have been teaching are children if you make racial, female degrading and cop bashing music you can make millions!  How do we allow are children to listen or even buy this music? Why are we not teaching our children the importance of teaching.  Why are we not paying our teachers better?  How about the fire fighters, police officers and doctors who save our lives.  Why do we reward a person hitting a ball an irrational amount of money?

Capitalism is a wonderful thing isn’t it?  But luck has allot to do with it.  I am sure Jim Carrey put allot of time into stand-up and many auditions trying to make it in Hollywood.  But how much money do you need?

How can people who make this much money allow poverty in the world yet the United States?  This is another subject I will dive into soon.  Do we train our students during their education years that money is the most important thing?  How about these colleges that bring in great athletes that can barely read?  Is our education system at much as fault?  I can go on forever……. What do you think?

I went to a small private high school in Fitchburg. The majority of students who attended that school did so because they could not afford to attend other private schools and there was less competition for the “important” college considered labels. During my second year there they instituted the “prep team”. The prep team was a group of basketball players that needed to make it to college in order to make it on to college teams…but they were unable to make it through normal high school. Special coaches and teachers were brought in to “help” the players along…some of the players were already out of high school but needed some “refreshing” before heading to college. When we were eating mediocre cafeteria food off of styrofoam plates, they were eating full meals off of real plates. The adjacent building that had originally been our rec building was turned into dorms for the new comers. Our school bus became their school bus. They were afforded extreme leniency on behavior and recieved constant attention. In return, this was supposed to bring notoriety to our school. What it did was alienate the students who at one time cherished the small outcast, loner mentality of our school. The core of our school was ignored in order to make some money. And all the students learned was that you didn’t have to be smart to get where you wanted to go in life, you just had to offer someone something that would fill their wallet a bit. I could make a much longer comment…but in short for the time being…I think that corporate america in their haste to make a buck is more than willing to overlook what ideals they are instilling into their children. Did our school need more money? Yes. But was taking the prep team under the circumstance it did and alienating it’s other students just to get it right? No. Did the school intend to alienate the students? No…but nevertheless it did and it teaches everyone that money is more important. We are all at fault because we all pay into this mentality somehow. We pay for the absurd pay per view channels to watch the games, we pay the high prices for movies, we buy into the merchandise…we spend an enormous amount of money to live vicariously through other people who we feel have what we want but think we can never attain. I have more to say but I have to go to bed lol.
