Why Is Family Diversity So Different Among Races?
I was reading about this information from the U.S Census Bureau (2001). I was amazed by how different the make up of the average household differs amongst Races. So I have to put these questions to people. WHY? Check these numbers out:
- Asian Americans:
- 81% are married couples
- 12% Female head of household, no husband present
- 7% Male head of household, no wife present
- Hispanics:
- 68% are married couples
- 23% Female head of household, no husband present
- 9% Male head of household, no wife present
- Whites:
- 81% are married couples
- 14% Female head of household, no husband present
- 5% Male head of household, no wife present
- African Americans:
- 46% are married couples
- 45% Female head of household, no husband present
- 9% Male head of household, no wife present
The numbers are astounding! Do the math and give me your thoughts on why these numbers are so different!

The sub ‘cultures’ in which races live in due to their ‘religious belifs, area they live in and their country of original heritage all have an effect on these figures. For example, people who have lived within a more Spanish culture will be brought up on the views that their parents/church/colleagues have, perhaps that a male-dominance is more important hence a higher percentage.
The truth is if they were all put together in one room for a white the figures would slowly become the same. Studies from the human genome project suggest DNA and therefore the whole human genetic make-up is 99.9% the same, so there would be no difference from the ‘race’ in itself, but from the surroundings or ‘cultures’ which they live in. In addition to this, statistics are very rarely accurate as they ‘extrapolate’ from small quantities of data, these could just be from erroneous data collection. You can’t always believe what you read.
