Years ago when I was in my twenties I worked for the telegraph company as a teletype operator. The one thing I hated about the job was when I had to deliver singing telegrams. This was usually done by telephone and I was not especially proud of my singing voice.

I was working for the telegraph office in Hayward, California and we had a regular customer, let’s call her Mrs. M, who was a bit eccentric. Mrs. M would call in and dictate long, rambling, non-sensical telegrams to the Pope, the President, her Congressman, and anybody else who happened to annoy her. There is a guy sitting at the bar that is just staring into his drink. This guy has been there for almost the entire day and hasn’t moved.

Suddenly a known trouble making carpenter walks into the bar. The carpenter walks over to where the guys had been sitting all day, takes his drink and chugs it down. The poor guy starts crying, the carpenter looks over to him and says “Come’on buddy, it was just a simply joke. Here, let me buy you around rough to make up for it. I can’t stand seeing a grown man cry.”

Then, the guy looks up at the carpenter and says “No, it’s not the drink, it’s the fact this day has been the worst day of my first. First off, my alarm doesn’t work this morning and I’m late for work. Then, when I finally arrive at work my boss is so pissed off he fires me. Some people are morning people. They get up before the sun rises and they go for a run around the local golf course, scaring the bird trying to get the first worm. They get back home for breakfast and have a shower. Then they catch up on all their letter writing and birthday cards. After making a few calls and concluding a few deals, they toddle off to work, arriving 20 minutes early.

Even in the most miserable of mundane surroundings you can bet a bottom dollar if good jokes or gags are cracked then the atmosphere changes from gloomy into a jolly ambiance.
