Fostering Optimism in Children
Optimism. Seeing the glass half full. Is it important? Research has found that optimists are happier, experience less stress, are more successful, and are healthier than pessimists. Optimists also outlive pessimists. We teach our children manners, we educate them and discipline them, all in the hope that one day they will fit into the wider world with success and happiness. What if we were to put similar effort into teaching our children to see the glass half full? [Read more →]

Important Children’s Health Issues
Issues concerning children’s health are ever changing with time. Currently our children face many new challenges and problems with their health and welfare.
Obesity
Obesity is perhaps the United States’ number one children’s health issue. 16% of children ages 6-19 are considered overweight or obese (above the 95th percentile for weight in relation to height), with numbers that keep climbing. Various factors play a part in this children’s health issue: if parent(s) are overweight, socioeconomic status, inactivity, and (obviously) nutrition. Hispanic youths are more likely to be overweight. Obesity specifically in girls, depends on their socioeconomic status; if they are of low income, the likelihood of being overweight is significantly higher than if they are of middle or upper class. Social Skill Problems – Why Your Child Has Social Skills Difficulties; What to Do About It
Social skills difficulties sneak up on most parents. Suddenly the child who had played alongside the other kids is now feeling isolated and unable to make friends.
This happens because of how quickly social interactions change once a child moves out of toddler-hood. While being able to take turns was once enough, now the child must be able to:
- Grasp the nuances of both verbal and non-verbal language.
- Distinguish between literal and non-literal language.
And while we take it for granted, this is not an easy thing to do.
The worst part of the whole thing is that these children want to make friends. They just do not know how to make or keep friends.
Why Your Child Just Doesn’t Get Social Skills
Parents often tell me it is hard to understand why their child “just doesn’t get it”. One reason is because their child is unable [Read more →]

Types of Books For Autistic Children
When you know someone with an autistic child, you may be wondering what are safe presents, and which ones you might want to skip. This will depend on the child, and a parent can probably tell you what is good and what is not. Many times clothes and loud toys are not a good idea, as you don’t know how they will respond to the textures or the noises associated with them. There are many times when books for autistic children are just the ticket, but you should remember that there are some that are better than others, and the reasons for this are quite simple.
One of the first things to consider when you want to buy books for autistic children is the material the book is made from. This might be something that would not be a consideration for a child without autism, but it is a matter of importance. Some children with [Read more →]

Tips for Teaching Autistic Children Reading Skills
Teaching autistic children reading skills can be a daunting task. Some children will never read, but many higher functioning children can learn to some extent and can end up being excellent readers.
Teaching autistic children to read has a very unique set of challenges that requires a parent or teacher to have a lot of patience. It can be like teaching children without autism but with the problems magnified.
Sometimes they can be very cooperative, but for the most part, autistic children have huge problems with attention span, lack any type of motivations to learn to read, and they have problems with figuring out the rules of reading and grammar when compared to children who do not have autism.
Learning to read should be fun for any child, but when it comes to autistic children, you have to reach them [Read more →]
