Social skills difficulties sneak up on most parents. Suddenly the child who had played alongside the other kids is now feeling isolated and unable to make friends.

This happens because of how quickly social interactions change once a child moves out of toddler-hood. While being able to take turns was once enough, now the child must be able to:

- Grasp the nuances of both verbal and non-verbal language.

- Distinguish between literal and non-literal language.

And while we take it for granted, this is not an easy thing to do.

The worst part of the whole thing is that these children want to make friends. They just do not know how to make or keep friends.

Why Your Child Just Doesn’t Get Social Skills

Parents often tell me it is hard to understand why their child “just doesn’t get it”. One reason is because their child is unable to learn social skills through experience like other children. Instead, he must be taught.

While not limited to them, social skills difficulties are key components to learning, language and Autism Spectrum disorders. Unfortunately the research shows that few of these children are getting the help they need.

The consequences of this are devastating. Children who have trouble socially are at greater risk of suffering from anxiety, depression, substance abuse and social isolation. They are also at greater risk of being bullied since they are unable to pick up on social cues.

The One Thing You Should NOT Do If Your Child Is Experiencing Social Skills Difficulties

Many parents get frustrated when they place their children in settings with other children who have good social skills. They hope that their child will learn from their peers, but since their child is unable to pick up on social cues they don’t.

While this environment is important to practice new skills, it is NOT the place to learn these skills. Everything moves too quickly and sets the child up for failure.

It also risks them being misunderstood by the other children and adults. This leads them to being labeled the “weird”, “mean” or “bad” kid. For example a child who’s overly blunt may be prone to hurt another child’s feelings without meaning to. Even though he does not understand what he is doing wrong he may get in trouble. Unfortunately, when children are given these negative labels they often feel it is their responsibility to live up to them.

For example, there is a little boy I know well whom I will call Brian. Brian is an active little boy with some attention and sensory issues. Brian is also a very bright boy who doesn’t miss a thing.

One day when Brian was doing something he should not be doing I asked him why he was doing it. He replied, “Because I am Brian”.

I shared this comment with his parents who now work hard at avoiding negative labels. However, while we can control the labels given to our children in our own homes, we cannot control how they are labeled outside of our homes.

What You Should Do If Your Child Has Social Skill Problems

Unfortunately social skills problems do not go away by themselves. As social situations become more complex social skill difficulties become more obvious. That means that without appropriate social skills training, children who have trouble socially will have more and more problems as they get older.

The best thing to do for your child is to work on these skills early. This will help your child effectively interact with his peers.

Do not push these needs aside until they become overly apparent. If you feel your child is at risk, or is having difficulty making friends, get help.

As I mentioned earlier, children with autism spectrum disorders as well as learning disabilities have social skills deficits as a central feature of their disorder. If this is your child, these needs should be addressed automatically. There is no reason to wait.

How Waiting to Get Social Skills Help For Your Child Only Complicates the Situation.

A mom from Nevada recently contacted me and said that her “very smart 11 year old daughter loves school” however, “she has kids she knows and will talk to, but no real friends. She cries at night and doesn’t want to go to recess or lunch at school.”

I wish I could say such stories are uncommon, but they are not. A Westchester mom recently said of her daughter “All I want is for her to have at least “one” friend so that she does not hate school and she is not so lonely.”

I hear these stories every day. For 15 years I have worked with children who have these challenges in their lives. However, it is still hard for me to see children who are unable to make or keep friends.

At a recent health fair, I met a mother who told me that her son who is on the autistic spectrum said, “Mom, I always feel like there is something I am missing and I just don’t know what it is.”

What he is missing are the nuances of social interactions. While most of us are able to learn them without assistance, some cannot. Fortunately with the help that is available today these children are able to improve their social skills and have friends. No child should be a lonely child.

Let’s take action today and help our children overcome their social skills difficulties. Our children are depending on us!

There is a guy sitting at the bar that is just staring into his drink. This guy has been there for almost the entire day and hasn’t moved.

Suddenly a known trouble making carpenter walks into the bar. The carpenter walks over to where the guys had been sitting all day, takes his drink and chugs it down. The poor guy starts crying, the carpenter looks over to him and says “Come’on buddy, it was just a simply joke. Here, let me buy you around rough to make up for it. I can’t stand seeing a grown man cry.”

Then, the guy looks up at the carpenter and says “No, it’s not the drink, it’s the fact this day has been the worst day of my first. First off, my alarm doesn’t work this morning and I’m late for work. Then, when I finally arrive at work my boss is so pissed off he fires me. When I leave the office I realize that someone has stolen my vehicle. When I contact the police they claim there is nothing they can do. Finally, I get a cab to take me home and when I get out I realized I left my wallet with all my credit cards inside the cab. The drive just took off and drove away”.

“As I walk into my house I find my wife sleeping with the gardener. So, I decided to leave my house and come over to this bar. Finally I got the courage to end it all and take my life, and then you show up and drink my drink that I was going to poison myself with.”

The two most popular beverages all over the world, are beer and wine. it doesn’t matter where you go, all over the globe, people love one or both of these drinks. It is no wonder that home made beer brewing and wine making are very popular. It’s cost efficient and its fun to do, the feeling of achievement when you pour your own home made beer has no comparison.

One of the other great advantages of home made beer brewing is the opportunity to drink beer that is ‘live’. Almost every beer you buy has been pasteurized. Pasteurization requires the beer to be cooked, this kills the yeast and the beer tastes considerably dissimilar from ‘live’ beer (that is, beer containing live yeast). The beer will not age without live yeast. With home made beer brewing your beer is never pasteurized therefore the taste is a more natural flavor, and the beer will age, changing in taste, texture and color over time.

Most people who start with home made beer brewing are fed up with paying the bills for their beer, they are looking for ways to cut budget without compromising. Home made beer brewing can do that for you. “In the United States, typical equipment costs are approximately $75 – $99 plus the cost of a large kettle (about $35-$50). Ingredients for a typical 5 gallon batch range from $27 to $45 depending on beer style, using dry or liquid yeast and the store’s pricing. Additional costs such as bottles (about $10-$14 per case of 24 12 oz bottles) (which may be reused with adequate cleaning) and sanitizers should also be anticipated. It is possible to produce beers using domestic kitchen equipment, but as it is reasonably inexpensive, most enthusiasts quickly buy some specialist equipment.”*

Home made beer brewing is a craft that is catching on fast throughout the world and it is not so difficult as you would think.

Home Made Beer Brewing, Step by Step

Basically there are just six steps in home made beer brewing:

1. Making wort or must. You can buy mash in the form of a kit initially. Later on you could go on to more complicated ones after you gain some experience. Mash is basically the product you obtain when malt and water are mixed and heated to make sugar. There are also no-boil kits available. This would give you a liquid called wort. You can buy the ready-made wort also if you have little patience.

2. Fermentation. Add yeast to your wort, this starts a chemical reaction resulting into carbon dioxide and alcohol.

3. Clarification.

4. Conditioning. After that the raw beer would be siphoned from its original container into a second one and coaxed to ferment some more. (Fermentation is actually complete, so the term secondary fermentation actually refers to conditioning.)

5. Packaging (in bottles, kegs or casks)

6. Enjoy!!!

Patience is required in home made beer brewing. The whole brewing process can take from two weeks to several months. depending on what kind of beer you are brewing. Most people who do home made beer brewing have several batches in different stages of completion to permit the dispensing of quality home brew at short notice.

As you can see, home made beer brewing is not difficult at all. Especially when you start out with a brewing kit, You can start today and see how easy Home Made Beer Brewing is.

Do you battle to wake up in the morning? If you're a night person, morning people think you're weird, but are you? Read on to find the truth...

Some people are morning people. They get up before the sun rises and they go for a run around the local golf course, scaring the bird trying to get the first worm. They get back home for breakfast and have a shower. Then they catch up on all their letter writing and birthday cards. After making a few calls and concluding a few deals, they toddle off to work, arriving 20 minutes early.

I don’t do mornings. The alarm clock is like the sword of damacles hanging over my slumber. It’s strident clamour heralds the death of my dreams and the destruction of the land of Nod. I hit the sleep button and scrape another few minutes of sleep from the desolation of another workday. The inevitable moment arrives: if I delay one more minute I will be seriously, noticeably, late for work. After chucking on some mismatching clothes, (because my eyes are still stuck shut with sleep) I stumble off to work, eventually waking up about an hour after getting there.

Morning people don’t believe in the existence of non-morning people. They think we are either mad or lazy liars. But go and pick up a morning person for a call out at 7pm and then the boot is on the other foot. They yawn expansively as they get in the car, they mutter incoherent sentences, and only your terrible driving keeps them from sleeping for the remainder of the 3 hour trip. They look at you in awe as you drive on through the night, and cannot believe that your are still wide awake and alert at 2 in the morning. they think you are some kind of freak, but they are impressed none the less.

Yup, we night people can keep going as long as we have to. We don’t do mornings, but we do do nights. Moring people doodoo nights! When the world is sleeping, we go on working, quietly acheiving and prevailing where others would fall down and sleep. We are the epitome of the long life battery, as we keep on keeping on through long nights.

Night people are often unseen, like the long haul train driver, the night flight airline pilot, the technician on a call out, the night watchman. But don’t ask us to get up early. That is being cruel. Our bodies are not designed for early morning activity. A morning run would kill us, and doing anything financial before 9am would be a fast road to bankruptcy. Writing a birthday card would lose a friend and create an enemy!

So if you’re a morning person, spare a thought for your yawning colleague. He’s not lazy. He’s not crazy. He’s just not in the right time zone.

Dane Jeffery Cook was born on March 18, 1972, in Arlington, Massachusetts which is a suburb of Boston. Cook is one of the most popular and controversial of the new generation of comedians. His careful cultivation of his fan base has been one of the keys to his success. His many credits include television and motion pictures as well as comedy albums. His second album, Retaliation, went double Platinum and was one of the best selling albums in the last three decades.

Cook’s style can be best described as observational humor. This style made popular by comedians such as George Carlin and Jerry Seinfeld finds the humor in everyday and common place activities. His motion picture career is on the fast track, also. He recently had the lead role in the movie, Employee of the Month, with Jessica Simpson. The critical response to the movie was only lukewarm, but it did enjoy some box office success.

Popularity with the fans is not purely by chance with Dane Cook. When he was just getting started, he took $25,000 of his own money to start his own website. He realized the popularity of the internet and how it could impact the success of any celebrity. He was one of the first comedians to set up a profile on MySpace. The profile today lists over 1.6 million friends. In 2006, he was on Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people.

One of his trade marks is the SU-FI. Short for super finger, this is an improvement over the classic obscene gesture. It uses two fingers and the thumb rather than just the extended middle finger. The gesture began with an onstage routine a few years back and has become a mainstay for Cook’s routines. He recently began his own company to handle the release of his albums and DVDs. The company is called SU-FI entertainment.

There is some controversy surrounding Cook. He has been characterized as arrogant and pushy by some fellow comedians. They complain about his refusal to stay within time limits during joint performances. While hosting Saturday Night Live, he delivered the longest monologue in the show’s thirty two year history. Other complaints accuse him of being too busy to write new jokes. He has been accused of stealing some popular routines from other comedians. It may just be professional jealousy behind all of this. Cook’s concerts are almost immediate sell outs where ever he performs. He remains one of the best loved comedians by the younger generation of comedy fans.

Reviewing a book involves developing an overall conception of the book from the reviewer's point of view. A precise understanding of every details of the book will enable you to grasp the entire meaning to contribute to your writing.

Reviewing a book involves developing an overall conception of the book from the reviewer’s point of view. A precise understanding of every details of the book will enable you to grasp the entire meaning to contribute to your writing. The contents of the book and the perspective from which it is written will determine how the book will be woven into critical remarks for the reader’s understanding.

Two approaches of Book reviewing

There are two main approaches towards book reviewing – the descriptive approach and the critical approach. Both are contradictory in their genre of analyzing the book. Descriptive reviewing delivers only the essential information, without dealing much with exaggeration. The writing accompanies stating of the aim and purpose of the author and quoting of striking passages from the content for better understanding.

On the other hand, a critical review is not solely about describing the book on some fixed notion, but also evaluating the book in terms of historical and literary standards. This episode of research aims at supporting the evaluation with evidence from the text. Nonetheless, there is something more to critical reviewing than what it seems. The review has to comprehend the author’s purpose towards writing the book and how the objective has contributed towards that purpose. The inherent meaning of the style will also determine the art form of the writing and the historical and literary standard upon which the writing has been based.

The essentials of book reviewing

1. You need to read the book with precision. Take note of the passages that impress you and those do not. Then assimilate what you have read and analyze the perspective of understanding of the book. The more you delve into the book, you will get an idea about the author’s thoughts. These basic understanding will enable you to weave a general remark about the book.

2. Biographical information about the author should carry some relevance with the subject of the review. This will aid in enhancing the reader’s understanding of the reviewer’s work from a much better perspective.

3. When the reviewer is doing critical reviewing, his major aim lies in the statement of opinion, that is the opinion that he has formed about the author and his writing. It is the overall judgment of the book, from the reviewer’s point of view.

Taking into considerations a few important things

‘Characters’ play an important role in the story of a book. The reviewer has to do a critical judgment of the characters, like from what sources the characters have been drawn, how the author has treated the characters and the major contribution of the characters in the story. The next most important point to focus is the ‘theme’. The reviewer has to realize the theme or themes of the book, whether the theme is traditional or familiar and the evaluation of theme, that is, whether it is psychological, or social or entertaining or escapist.

Then, the ‘plot’ of the story is the matter of discussion. The plot will certainly revolve around the genre of the book, whether romantic, or mystery/suspense. Then, analyze whether the plot is primary or secondary to the theme of the story. The other features to be taken care about are the ‘style’ and the ‘setting’ of the story. Hence, the basic steps of book reviewing will help you with a definite objective of book reviewing.

A study has recently came out that shows how unilateral divorce laws make divorce more frequent. The empirical research shows what any sensible person would already guess — easy divorce laws make for more divorces. This is only magnified by the fact the divorcing party usually has great incentives to divorce and few incentives to stay (independent of whatever marital problems may exist). The fact that this is even a debate in academia shows how politicized and irrational the academy has become. Sure, there are plenty of other reasons to divorce that also drive the high rate of marriage failures, but government incentivizes failure, not success. That certainly doesn’t help.

Add into this debate on divorce law the current debate on gay marriage. With easy divorce, marriage has been demoted to the status of a contract. If it’s just a meaningless contract, why can’t any combination of participants enter into it? A good question that cannot be easily answered when framed that way.

First off, marriage in this society (independent of its religious roots) is not even a contract. Contracts are designed to be enforceable in the event of a breach. Divorce rewards the breaching party most of the time. None of the terms of marriage are enforceable in any real way. There are no options for a spouse to rein in an adulterous partner and the few laws still on the books against adultery are waiting to be declared unconstitutional.

Further, easy divorce ends up putting the entire lives of the parties into the public record and under the control of a judge. One can walk to any courthouse in this country and start reading detailed accounts of broken marriages. Judges have tremendous power to allocate assets, assign living arrangements, and exercise large amounts of control over the parties. This should greatly worry any libertarian.

One wonders why gay people want a piece of that action. Straight couples are putting off marriage because many wonder if it’s really worth all the risk. Gay couples certainly aren’t immune from divorce either. Marriage is a loaded term devoid of any meaning behind it. It appears that gay marriage is an attempt at social acceptance, not any desire for benefits. Any real look at marriage shows that on the balance, marriage confers a net liability, not a net benefit.

Before discussing who can participate in marriage, the discussion that we should be having is what the institution of marriage should mean. Right now, the institution currently in place in the United States (again separated from its religious roots) is bordering on meaningless. There is certainly no shortage of people who think so considering every time a government program comes down to support marriage, the usual suspects try to stop it.

The fact is, any serious look at the history of the institution of marriage will show that it is a religious institution. Governmental recognition was not only a later development for marriage, but it also is a secondary aspect. The argument that marriage is a legal institution, a mere creation of government, is a profound mutilation of marriage. One would think that the myriad of governmental forms throughout history would have produced a myriad of forms of marriage, but it has not.

If there is going to be public recognition and support of marriage, there needs to be a corresponding public good and duty. Government shouldn’t give out money simply because someone wants a paycheck. What public good is fostered by the recognition of gay marriage? The same could be asked of marriage in the way it is practiced here also. The fact is, until the promises made and the obligations uttered on the wedding day are actually binding in any real way, it’s hard to find much of a public good.

Instead of arguing the particulars of marriage and haggling over the petty details, it’s time the question of marriage in its fundamentals enters the public discourse. What should marriage mean? Should its obligations be actually binding? What public good is to be fostered? These are the questions that really matter.
